Flohmarkt
Berlin -St. Petersburg
The
window into a city’s soul. Berlin and Petersburg
through the prism of flea markets
Photos
by Lilia Voronkova.
Public
spaces are the site of public culture, “they are
window into a city’s soul” (Sharon Zukin).
Flea market – is a very special public space. From
the first glance it looks like the ordinary market place,
though a little bit “strange”. In fact it
is much more than just a market. Flea market is a part
of the city scene, a spot of sociability, communication
and interaction of the city dwellers. It is social and
cultural phenomenon that helps to look into the life of
society.
This
exhibition represents people, objects and spaces found
at Flohmarkt am Mauerpark in Berlin and Udelnyi flea market
in St.-Petersburg. Similar plots from two flea markets
have been chosen for the comparison; however they allow
revealing deep differences existing in the lives of two
cities - different but similar, serious but entertaining,
“poor but sexy”.
